In this recipe you can really easily substitute whatever you have on hand. Just go for it! You can't go wrong :)

Hi Kay,
I would think that even if you just put the raw ingredients in a pile on the counter three (!) teenage boys would finish it off without any difficulties !
I like the zaatar idea, I'll try it too.
Thanks!

Hi Barb! Gefilte fish is so much easier to make than you imagine. I think that grandmothers around the world have a conspiracy among them, that states that they are not to let on how easy it is to prepare gefilte fish, so that we will always be utterly grateful to the huge effort they put in to making our meal a tasty one. They are more clever than they may seem (duh), and are probably out getting their hair done, playing bridge, or watching Mad Men while we think they are hard at work cooking for us. In any case, to prevent the fish smell, just use a metal or glass bowl to mix the fish and other ingredients so that the smell doesn't cling to it. I have not found that gefilte fish smells any more than cooking other fish dishes. What does have a very strong smell is the fresh horseradish. Often I will take the food processor outside to make it, so that it doesn't sting the eyes of whoever happens to be in the house at the time.

The carrot souffle sounds good! I had a look at a couple of Jewish Holiday cookbooks to find the answer to 'Why do we eat carrots on Rosh Hashana?', and here is what I discovered, thanks to Joan Nathan:

*Carrots were one of the only sweet vegetables available to poor Jews of Poland and Russia
*The word for carrot in Yiddish (mern) also means to increase or multiply, so the Jews would eat carrots to symbolize one of the mitzvot
*Carrots cut into rounds resemble coins, so they could also symbolize a prosperous year

And they're healthy and taste great, so why not??

Let me know if you ever do decide you want to try the gefilte fish, and I'll post a recipe.

Thanks for the comment, Barb !

Hi Edie, I made these this afternoon - added some zaatar (hyssop) and they came out super - within 30 minutes three teenage boys had scoffed the lot - they didn't even make it into the cookie tin !

Wow! I never thought of making crackers, though I do bake bread regularly. I don't have rye flour either, or seseme seeds, but I might give these a try if I can find the ingredients. They look yummy!

Sounds like my Rosh HaShana dinner! Well, I don't make g'filte fish, to be honest. My mother makes it and it's fantastic, but I hate how the whole house smells like fish for days afterwards. I just can't bring myself to make it.

And I make a sweet carrot suffle for Rosh HaShana, too, but don't ask me why. What doe carrots have to do with Rosh HaShana? I have no idea, but by now it's "tradition." :-)

No problem! Only there's not much to blog about:

Step one: Find a cow.
Step two: Take a bite.
Step three: Smile.
